Account-linked service

A feature that works through a signed-in user account and its permissions.

An account-linked service is a feature that only works when a user is signed in, and it relies on that account’s identity, settings, and permissions. The service may live in an app, a cloud platform, or a smart device, but access is controlled through the account rather than through the device alone.

In cyber security, this matters because compromise of the account can expose the service too. Attackers may abuse stolen credentials, reused passwords, or weak session controls to reach private data, settings, or connected devices. Defenders reduce that risk by using multi-factor authentication, checking which devices and services are connected, and limiting permissions to what is needed. With voice assistants and streaming platforms, an account-linked service can also affect privacy: if voice input or cloud features are enabled, commands and preferences may be processed through the signed-in account.
