Zigbee

A low-power wireless protocol used by many smart home devices and sensors.

Zigbee is a low-power wireless protocol designed for short messages between smart home devices, sensors, buttons, and controllers. It is often used where battery life matters and where devices need to form a mesh network, relaying traffic through one another to extend coverage. In security terms, Zigbee matters because a device is not just a piece of hardware anymore; it is a networked endpoint that must be joined, trusted, and managed.

In real attacks, the weak point is often not the radio itself but the trust process around it: insecure pairing, weak device isolation, poor key management, or overly broad controller permissions. Defenders should treat Zigbee devices like any other asset on the network by tracking inventory, limiting which devices can join, and separating automations where possible. A smart sensor may be small, but once it joins the mesh, it can affect the security of the whole home system.
