XMPP

Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, an open messaging protocol used for real-time communication and signaling.

XMPP, or Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, is an open standard for real-time messaging, presence updates, and lightweight signaling between systems. It uses a client-server model and can support one-to-one chat, group messaging, and machine-to-machine coordination, which is why it appears in collaboration tools and in some management platforms.

In cyber security, XMPP matters because any always-on messaging channel can become an attack surface. If authentication, encryption, or server controls are weak, attackers may abuse XMPP for command-and-control, covert signaling, or unauthorized administrative actions. Defenders watch for unusual logins, new servers, abnormal message patterns, and traffic that does not match approved clients. In remote management environments, XMPP-like signaling may carry status updates or remote-action requests, so securing that channel is essential to prevent trusted control traffic from being turned into a path for abuse.
