Workplace surveillance

Monitoring activity or behavior in an employment setting, often with serious privacy and power-balance concerns.

Workplace surveillance is the monitoring of employees’ activity, communications, or behavior in an employment setting. It can include logging device use, reading emails or chat messages, tracking location or attendance, recording screens, or using AI to infer mood, attention, or intent from voice, text, or facial cues. The technical shift from simple logging to behavioral inference makes these systems more intrusive and less transparent.

In cyber security, workplace surveillance matters because it creates large stores of sensitive data and high-value targets for abuse. Poorly secured monitoring platforms can expose private messages, biometrics, or performance data, while overly broad access can enable misuse by managers or insiders. Defenders should apply purpose limitation, strong access control, retention limits, encryption, audit logs, and clear consent or notice. Surveillance tools are also a defense mechanism: they can support insider-risk detection, fraud investigations, and incident response, but only when their outputs are treated as probabilistic signals, not facts about a person.
