Workload smoothing

Scheduling and control methods that reduce sudden changes in power demand.

Workload smoothing is the practice of scheduling and controlling compute jobs so their power use changes gradually instead of jumping sharply. In a data center, this can mean staggering batch jobs, capping GPU draw, adding ramp-up delays, or distributing tasks across time and nodes. The goal is to avoid fast demand spikes that can stress power delivery equipment or create unstable electrical transients.

In cyber security, workload smoothing matters because modern attacks and defenses can depend on how infrastructure behaves under load. A legitimate-looking AI training job can become a cross-layer risk if many GPUs start and stop in sync, turning compute activity into a visible power signal. Defenders use smoothing to reduce that risk, improve power quality, and make malicious or accidental load manipulation less effective. It is a useful control where cyber operations and facility stability overlap.
