Working fluid

the substance that carries energy or motion through a machine.

A working fluid is the substance inside a machine that transfers energy, pressure, heat, or motion. It may be air, steam, water, refrigerant, hydraulic oil, or another medium chosen for how it behaves under compression, expansion, or flow. The fluid is not just a fill material; it is part of the mechanism that makes the device function.

In cyber security, working fluids matter whenever software controls physical systems such as HVAC, pumps, turbines, cooling loops, or industrial equipment. If an attacker changes setpoints, valves, fans, or pump speeds, they can alter fluid pressure and temperature, disrupt service, or damage hardware. Defenders monitor these systems because abnormal fluid behavior can reveal tampering, sensor spoofing, or control-network compromise. Understanding the working fluid helps analysts see how a digital action becomes a physical effect.
