Workflow enforcement is the logic that controls how a process is allowed to move from one state to the next. In security-sensitive systems, it decides whether a request is valid, whether an action happens in the right order, and whether required checks have been completed before access is granted or a command is accepted.
This matters because attackers often look for broken state handling instead of obvious input bugs. If a system fails to enforce its workflow correctly, an attacker may skip authentication steps, reuse a session out of order, trigger commands at the wrong time, or reach administrative functions without passing normal safeguards. Defenders look for strong protocol-state validation, explicit authorization at every step, and logging that reveals unexpected transitions. Workflow enforcement flaws are especially dangerous in management services, collaboration platforms, and network devices where a small logic error can become a control-plane compromise.
