A work item is a tracked project object used to organize development work, such as an issue, task, bug, or similar planning record. In collaboration platforms, work items often carry metadata like assignee, labels, state, comments, and links to branches or merge requests.
In cyber security, work items matter because they can be part of a trusted workflow. If an attacker can create or modify a work item through a leaked email alias, API token, or other trusted input path, they may be able to inject false requests, trigger notifications, influence approvals, or steer automation that reacts to new records. Defenders should treat creation channels as security boundaries: restrict who can submit items, protect any private incoming address like a secret, and monitor for unexpected object creation or workflow chaining from untrusted sources.
