The WordPress Media Library is the built-in place where administrators and authorized users upload, store, browse, and reuse media files such as images, audio, video, and documents. It is more than a file picker: it often sits at the center of the site’s upload workflow.
In cyber security, the Media Library matters because uploaded files are not always treated as passive content. Many plugins, themes, and server-side image tools automatically parse or transform media after upload. If one of those parsers has a memory-safety bug, a crafted file can turn a routine upload into a crash or, in some cases, a code-execution risk. Defenders reduce exposure by limiting who can upload, restricting accepted formats, keeping media-processing libraries patched, and isolating thumbnail or transcoding services from the main WordPress process.
