Wireless credentials

The passwords or keys used to join and secure a Wi-Fi network.

Wireless credentials are the passwords, passphrases, or cryptographic keys used to join and protect a Wi-Fi network. In home networks this is often a WPA2 or WPA3 passphrase; in enterprise setups it may include certificates, pre-shared keys, or login data tied to an access controller.

They matter because anyone who learns these secrets can connect as a trusted device, bypassing normal perimeter controls. Attackers try to steal them from router backups, management interfaces, configuration files, QR codes, or exposed admin panels. Once recovered, wireless credentials can be reused to eavesdrop on traffic, pivot deeper into the local network, or maintain access even after a password change if the attacker also controls the router. Defenders protect them by restricting management access, encrypting backups, using strong unique passphrases, and rotating keys when compromise is suspected.
