Windows autostart persistence

A way malware can launch automatically when a user logs in, helping it survive reboots.

Windows autostart persistence is any technique malware uses to start automatically when a user signs in or when the system boots. Common methods include Run and RunOnce registry keys, the Startup folder, scheduled tasks, services, and other logon hooks. The goal is simple: survive reboots so the attacker does not need to reinfect the device every time.

This matters because persistence turns a one-time compromise into an ongoing foothold. In espionage or theft campaigns, a hidden implant can keep collecting emails, browser data, or chat content long after the initial execution. Defenders look for new autoruns, suspicious binaries in user-writable locations, unusual scheduled tasks, and changes that point to unauthorized software launching at logon. Tools such as EDR, Sysmon, and autorun review can help spot these implants before they keep reappearing.
