Win32 callback API

A Windows interface that lets an application register code for later invocation by the system or another component.

A Win32 callback API is a Windows interface that lets an application register a function to be called later by the operating system or another component. Instead of running code directly, the program supplies a callback pointer or handler, and Windows invokes it when a specific event or operation occurs.

These APIs matter in cyber security because they are normal, legitimate execution paths that attackers can abuse for indirect code execution. A loader or implant may use callbacks to hide the real control flow, make malicious behavior look like routine application logic, or complicate endpoint detection. Defenders should pay attention when a signed or trusted program uses unusual callback-heavy behavior, unexpected module loads, strange process ancestry, or execution patterns that do not match the software’s normal purpose. Monitoring how an application uses callbacks is often more useful than checking only whether the API itself is allowed.
