WebAudio is a browser API that lets web pages create, process, mix, and synthesize audio in real time. It supports tasks such as playback, filtering, analysis, and generating sound from code, which makes it useful for games, conferencing tools, and interactive media.
From a security perspective, WebAudio matters because it handles complex, untrusted input inside the browser’s core. Audio pipelines often include parsing, buffer management, and type handling in native code, so mistakes can lead to crashes, memory corruption, or type confusion. Attackers may try to trigger such bugs with a specially crafted page or media stream, turning a browser feature into an exploit path. Defenders reduce the risk by keeping browsers updated, limiting exposure to vulnerable versions, and using fuzzing and code review to catch memory-safety flaws before release.
