Web-based tool

a tool accessed through a browser rather than installed locally.

A web-based tool is software you use in a browser instead of installing it on your computer. The application runs on a remote server or combines server and browser logic, so the user only needs a compatible browser and network access. This makes distribution simple, updates centralized, and access possible across many devices.

In cyber security, web-based tools matter because they are easy to reach and easy to control, which makes them useful for administration, testing, and secure workflows such as device setup or customization. The same convenience also creates risk: attackers often build phishing pages, fake login portals, or malicious control panels as web-based tools because they are easy to share and hard to distinguish from legitimate services. Defenders use web-based tools for dashboards, policy enforcement, monitoring, and incident response, but they must protect them with strong authentication, secure transport, and careful access control.
