Water block

A metal part that transfers heat from a chip into the coolant.

A water block is the metal contact piece in a liquid-cooling loop that sits on top of a chip and transfers heat into the coolant. It is usually made from a highly conductive material such as copper or aluminum, and its job is to spread heat evenly so the liquid can carry it away efficiently.

In cyber security, water blocks matter because stable hardware is part of system security and reliability. Secure servers, test rigs, and high-density compute systems may use liquid cooling to avoid thermal throttling, crashes, or forced shutdowns that can interrupt defenses, logging, or incident response. Poor contact, clogged flow, or tampering with the cooling path can raise temperatures and create availability problems. Defenders also pay attention to water blocks when evaluating physical security, hardware integrity, and the risk that overheated components may fail in ways that make a system easier to disrupt.
