Warranty

A limited support period during which the maker may repair or replace a product.

A warranty is a limited period of support in which the maker agrees to repair or replace a product if it fails under specified conditions. It usually covers manufacturing defects, not damage, misuse, or normal wear. Once the warranty expires, the owner may still have a working right to use the product, but official support can become slower, more expensive, or unavailable.

In cyber security, warranty matters because it often shapes how long a device stays maintained and secure. Expired warranty can mean fewer authorized repairs, less access to replacement parts, and more pressure to keep using unsupported hardware or firmware. Attackers benefit when users delay replacement or operate broken, unpatched devices. Defenders use warranty and support status to plan asset lifecycle, patch schedules, and hardware refreshes, especially for laptops, routers, and embedded systems where a small fault or unfixable flaw can create operational downtime.
