A warehouse management system (WMS) is software that coordinates inventory, picking, packing, and dispatch inside a distribution site. It records where goods are stored, which orders must be fulfilled, and when items move to shipping or receiving. In practice, a WMS often connects to barcode scanners, handheld devices, printers, and partner integrations, making it a central control point for warehouse operations.
In cyber security, a WMS matters because it sits close to business-critical workflows. If attackers disrupt it, staff may lose visibility into stock, shipments can stall, and order status can become unreliable. A compromise can also spread through connected systems if access is poorly segmented. Defenders protect WMS environments with strong authentication, network segmentation, logging, tested backups, and fallback procedures so warehouses can keep operating in a degraded mode during an outage or attack.
