Wallet mapping is the process of linking a person or organization to a cryptocurrency address, wallet cluster, or transaction trail. In regulated crypto services, this link often comes from KYC records, account logs, payment records, or internal admin data. It turns otherwise pseudonymous blockchain activity into an identifiable financial history.
This matters because wallet mapping can expose privacy, compliance, and operational risk. Attackers who steal customer records or internal databases may use the mapping to de-anonymize users, follow funds, or increase extortion pressure. Defenders reduce the risk by limiting who can export or join identity and wallet data, enforcing strong access controls, keeping audit logs, and minimizing how long these cross-reference datasets are retained.
