Volatility 3 is an open-source framework for analyzing captured memory images, often called RAM dumps. Its modular plugins examine specific artifacts, such as running processes, loaded modules, or network-related information, depending on the image and available plugin support.
Memory can contain evidence of activity that may not remain in disk files or logs, making the framework useful for incident response and forensic investigations. Analysts must select suitable plugins and account for the image’s operating system and context; results should be validated and corroborated with other evidence. Preserving the original image, recording commands and tool versions, and maintaining chain of custody help make findings reproducible and defensible. Volatility 3 supports analysis—it does not by itself prove that an intrusion occurred.
