Vital systems are the minimum set of systems, networks, and controls required to keep a critical service running and to preserve continuity during disruption. In operational technology (OT), this usually includes the core control, monitoring, and communications paths that must stay available for safe operation.
This term matters because defenders cannot protect everything equally during an incident. Identifying vital systems helps security teams isolate the most important assets, reduce attack surface, and plan for degraded or manual operation if connectivity must be cut. In real defenses, vital systems are separated with physical isolation where possible, or with strict segmentation, hardened management access, and tested recovery procedures. Attackers often try to reach these components because they can stop services, change process behavior, or block recovery, so protecting vital systems is central to both resilience and incident containment.
