Virality is the rapid, wide circulation of content across users, devices, and networks. In cyber security, it describes how quickly a message, link, file, or claim can spread before people verify it. High virality matters because speed can outrun review: phishing lures, fake alerts, malicious attachments, and disinformation can reach many targets in minutes, increasing the chance of clicks, credential theft, or panic.
Defenders watch virality as both a threat signal and a control problem. Attackers try to create shareable payloads, relying on reposts, forwarding, or automated bots to amplify reach. Security teams counter with content scanning, rate limits, account abuse detection, takedown workflows, and clear warnings that slow reshares. In reputation attacks, virality can separate public perception from original context, making correction harder than the first spread.
