Version compliance

The process of confirming that systems are running the intended patched software build.

Version compliance is the process of confirming that endpoints are running the intended, patched software build. In practice, it means checking that the installed version matches the approved release, not just that an update was downloaded or scheduled. This matters because many security fixes only become active after a restart or a successful rollout to the correct platform build.

In cyber security, version compliance is a basic but critical defense control. Attackers often target known vulnerabilities soon after patches are released, expecting some systems to lag behind. Defenders use version checks in asset inventories, endpoint management, and compliance reporting to find machines that missed an update, failed to reboot, or are on the wrong build for Windows, macOS, or Linux. For browsers and other fast-moving software, confirming compliance can close the gap between patch availability and real protection.
