User data directory

The main storage location where a browser keeps profile data and local state.

The user data directory is the main folder a browser uses to store profile data and local state. On systems such as macOS, it can hold cookies, session tokens, history, bookmarks, cached files, and browser settings. Chrome and similar browsers rely on this directory to preserve a user’s identity and preferences across launches.

In cyber security, this matters because the directory can become a target for profile theft or cloning. If malware copies or reuses the directory, it may inherit authenticated browser sessions and act inside web apps without knowing the password. Defenders watch for unusual browser launches, duplicate profile paths, and unexpected access to profile folders. Protecting this data helps limit session replay, account abuse, and stealthy browser-based intrusion.
