URL takedown

The removal or blocking of a web address used to host or share content.

A URL takedown is the removal, blocking, or de-listing of a web address that hosts or shares content. It can be done by a hosting provider, registrar, platform, browser safety service, or law-enforcement request. The goal is to make the link unreachable, even if the underlying file or page may still exist elsewhere.

In cyber security, URL takedowns matter because many harmful campaigns rely on simple links rather than complex malware. Phishing pages, scam stores, extremist propaganda, credential harvesters, and command-and-control redirects often live at short-lived URLs that are easy to replace. Defenders use takedowns to disrupt distribution, buy time for victims, and reduce exposure. Attackers respond by re-hosting, using mirrors, redirects, and new domains, so takedown efforts usually depend on fast detection, link analysis, and repeated monitoring.
