Update agent

Software that installs or coordinates system updates, often with elevated trust and broad reach across devices.

An update agent is software that checks for, downloads, verifies, and installs patches for an operating system, application, firmware, or driver. It often runs with elevated privileges so it can replace protected files, write system settings, and coordinate reboots or rollback steps across a device or fleet.

In cyber security, update agents matter because they sit in a trusted position in the software supply path. If an attacker can abuse or compromise one, they may be able to push malicious code, tamper with signatures, or use the agent’s broad access to move deeper into a system. Defenders care about these tools because they are central to patch management, but they also expand the attack surface. In real environments, update agents appear in enterprise management consoles, vendor update utilities, and automated firmware deployment systems, where version checks, authentication, and secure transport are essential controls.
