Unauthorized file uploads are file transfers performed without proper approval, access rights, or policy enforcement. They matter because uploads can move data out of a trusted environment, place sensitive documents in the wrong system, or deliver malicious content to a remote service. In security operations, this can look like data exfiltration, policy bypass, or an application abuse path.
Defenders watch for this behavior with upload allowlists, authentication checks, content scanning, rate limits, and audit logs. In agentic or automated systems, the risk is higher if the software can write to cloud storage, ticketing systems, or external endpoints on its own. Strong controls such as human approval for sensitive actions, sandboxing, and egress restrictions help ensure files only move where they are intended to go.
