Trust cue

A sign that makes someone seem legitimate, such as a profile, title, or mutual contact.

A trust cue is any detail that makes a person or message seem credible at first glance. In cyber security, that can be a polished profile, a professional title, a shared contact, a verified badge, or familiar company language. Attackers use these signals to lower suspicion before asking for money, credentials, or sensitive information.

Trust cues matter because people often rely on them when deciding whether to engage. A scammer may build a convincing account, reference mutual connections, or speak in a careful business tone to look legitimate. The defense is to treat trust cues as hints, not proof. Verify identity through an independent channel, check whether the request makes sense, and slow down when urgency, secrecy, or emotional pressure appears. In practice, good security training teaches users to look past the surface signal and confirm the person behind it.
