TRNG

True Random Number Generator, a hardware source of randomness used in key creation.

A TRNG, or True Random Number Generator, is a hardware component that produces randomness from physical processes such as thermal noise, oscillator jitter, or other unpredictable signals. Unlike a pseudorandom generator, a TRNG is meant to create new entropy that is not derived from a software seed.

TRNGs matter because strong cryptographic keys depend on strong randomness. If the entropy used to create a seed, mnemonic, or private key is weak, an attacker may be able to guess or reconstruct the secret and derive every address or key that comes from it. In practice, TRNGs are used in hardware wallets, secure elements, and other cryptographic devices, often combined with software mixing and health checks. Defenders look for failures such as biased output, low entropy, or firmware bugs that reduce randomness, and they may add independent entropy sources like dice rolls or external audits to reduce trust in a single generator.
