Triggered lightning

Lightning deliberately initiated under controlled conditions for study.

Triggered lightning is lightning that is deliberately initiated under controlled conditions, usually so researchers can study a strike without waiting for a random storm event. The goal is not to “control” nature, but to create a predictable moment when instruments can capture electrical, atmospheric, and timing data.

In cybersecurity, the idea matters as an analogy for controlled testing. Security teams often need to trigger rare or hard-to-reproduce behavior on purpose so they can observe it safely, such as in lab environments, simulations, logging drills, and incident-response exercises. This improves visibility into conditions that are difficult to study in production. Attackers also rely on the same principle in a different form: they may trigger specific code paths, alerts, or responses to study defenses. The defensive lesson is simple: if an event is rare and important, design a safe way to make it observable.
