Transmission medium

The physical path a signal uses to travel from sender to receiver.

A transmission medium is the physical path a signal uses to travel from sender to receiver. It can be copper wire, fiber optics, radio spectrum, open air, or even a laser beam. The medium matters because it shapes signal quality, speed, range, and how easy the channel is to observe or disrupt. In the optics demo context, the laser is the medium carrying the video signal through light rather than through a cable.

In cyber security, the transmission medium affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Attackers may tap copper lines, intercept wireless traffic, exploit stray optical emissions, or jam a radio link. Defenders choose media and controls to reduce risk: shielded cables, fiber instead of exposed copper, strong encryption on any shared channel, and monitoring for interference or unusual signal loss. Understanding the medium helps engineers predict where data can leak, where noise can corrupt it, and where an attacker can physically or electronically intervene.
