A trademark is a protected sign, word, phrase, logo, or other identifier that tells people which company or service a product comes from. In cyber security, trademarks matter because attackers often copy trusted brands to trick users. A familiar logo, name, or slogan can be used in phishing emails, fake login pages, malicious ads, or impersonation accounts to make a scam look legitimate.
Defenders use trademark awareness to spot abuse and reduce confusion. Security teams may monitor for lookalike domains, unauthorized brand use, and fake support messages that borrow a real company’s identity. Trademark protection also supports takedowns and platform reports when an attacker uses a brand to steal credentials, distribute malware, or conduct fraud. In practice, a trademark is not just a legal asset: it is also a trust signal that attackers try to exploit and defenders try to verify.
