Tracking parameters

Extra URL components used to carry analytics or attribution data.

Tracking parameters are extra pieces added to a URL to carry analytics, campaign, or attribution data. Common examples include tags that identify the source of a click, the app that shared it, or the marketing campaign that generated it. The destination page is usually the same, but the full link can expose more information than users expect.

In cyber security, tracking parameters matter because URLs are often copied into messages, emails, logs, and browser histories. That can leak identifiers, reveal internal workflows, or make it easier to correlate a user’s activity across sites. Defenders sometimes strip these parameters in link-cleaning tools, privacy-focused browsers, or secure share features to reduce unnecessary metadata. Attackers can also abuse them for phishing, luring victims through long, cluttered links that hide the real destination or make suspicious redirects harder to spot.
