Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is a pricing and planning method that measures the full lifecycle cost of software, not just the initial build or license price. It includes maintenance, support, hosting, updates, migration, training, compliance work, and the staff time needed to operate the system safely.
TCO matters in cyber security because a cheap product can become expensive if it needs frequent patches, special tooling, or manual work to stay secure. Attackers often benefit when organizations underestimate these ongoing costs and delay updates, monitoring, or hardening. Defenders use TCO to compare vendors more realistically, budget for incident response and secure operations, and avoid buying software that looks inexpensive up front but creates higher risk and long-term exposure.
