Tool change

A switch between print heads, feed paths, or materials during fabrication.

A tool change is the switch from one instrument, command, payload, or workflow component to another during an operation. In fabrication it means changing print heads, feed paths, or materials; in cyber security, the same idea appears when an operator, script, or malware sample moves from one tool to the next to complete a task.

Tool changes matter because every transition can create overhead, errors, or detectable signals. Attackers may swap scanners, exploitation modules, credential tools, or lateral-movement utilities to evade detection or recover from failures. Defenders watch for these transitions because a sudden shift in process behavior, file access, network destinations, or command style can reveal a staged intrusion. Reducing unnecessary tool changes also improves operational reliability, whether the goal is safer administration or more consistent attack simulation.
