Threat intel triage is the process of checking an external claim, alert, or report against internal evidence before deciding what it means. In practice, analysts compare the claim with logs, endpoint telemetry, identity activity, network traces, asset inventories, and known business context. The goal is to separate signal from noise and avoid treating every public accusation as a confirmed compromise.
This matters because threat actors, leak sites, and rumor channels can create urgency without proving intrusion, data theft, or operational impact. Good triage helps defenders prioritize response, validate exposure, and avoid unnecessary panic or wasted effort. In real attacks, triage often starts when a victim post, ransom note, or indicator appears. Defenders then look for matching authentication events, unusual data transfer, suspicious processes, or evidence of access to determine whether the claim is credible and how far the issue has spread.
