A terminology update is a revision to the words, labels, or definitions used in a standard, guideline, or policy. In cybersecurity, this can seem minor, but it often changes how people interpret requirements and how tools map data to those requirements. If a standard renames a field, removes an old term, or tightens a definition, organizations may need to adjust templates, procurement language, reports, and automation.
This matters because security controls depend on consistent language. In SBOM and supply chain work, a terminology update can affect how vendors describe components, how defenders compare inventories, and whether vulnerability scanners or asset systems can match records correctly. Attackers can exploit confusion created by inconsistent wording, while defenders use clearer terminology to improve triage, compliance, and incident response. The practical goal is alignment: everyone should mean the same thing when they describe software risk.
