Term length

The duration for which funds remain committed before maturity.

Term length is the period of time that funds, credentials, or a financial product remain committed before they mature or become available again. In fixed-term banking products, it defines how long money is locked away in exchange for a stated return. In cyber security, the same idea matters because a longer commitment window increases the impact of mistakes: if an account is opened through phishing, weak authentication, or a compromised session, the user may be unable to change the decision quickly.

Attackers and defenders both care about term length. Fraudsters may hide lock-in details in fake banking pages or approval screens so victims accept unfavorable conditions. Defenders use clear disclosures, step-by-step confirmation, and strong identity checks to make the commitment obvious before funds are locked. For security reviews, term length is a risk factor because it affects user control, recovery options, and how long bad activity can remain in place.
