Terabit per second (Tbps)

A bandwidth unit used to describe extremely large traffic volumes.

Terabit per second, abbreviated Tbps, is a unit of bandwidth that equals one trillion bits transferred each second. It is used to describe very large network traffic volumes, especially when measuring backbone links, cloud capacity, or the scale of a denial-of-service flood.

In cyber security, Tbps matters because DDoS attacks can generate traffic large enough to overwhelm internet links and service edges. Security teams use Tbps figures to judge whether a defense has enough capacity headroom, whether scrubbing systems can filter malicious traffic at line speed, and whether rerouting can keep legitimate users connected. A higher Tbps number does not automatically mean a better attack or defense, but it is a practical way to communicate stress on infrastructure at extreme scale.
