Telemarketing

direct marketing by phone, often governed by specific rules on contact and privacy.

Telemarketing is direct marketing by phone, used to promote products, services, or contracts to people or businesses. In cyber security, it matters because outbound calling systems handle personal data, consent records, and identity checks. A telemarketing operation is only as trustworthy as its data handling: who may be called, why they were called, and whether the contact can be proven lawful.

Security teams treat telemarketing as a control problem. Weak call lists, poor access control, or sloppy recordkeeping can expose customer data and create compliance gaps. Attackers also abuse phone-based outreach for social engineering, using scripted calls to trick victims into revealing passwords, one-time codes, or account details. Defenses include consent management, do-not-call screening, call logging, strict script approval, and audit trails that show every contact had a valid basis.
