Telecom metadata

service and account details tied to communications records.

Telecom metadata is the service and account information tied to communications records, such as a subscriber number, plan status, billing identifiers, device or SIM details, and call or message routing data. It is not the content of a call or text, but it can still reveal who a user is, how a line is managed, and which services are active.

This data matters in cyber security because it can be used to verify identity, reset accounts, or redirect communications. If attackers obtain telecom metadata, they may use it for phishing, SIM swap fraud, account takeover, or to profile a target’s activity. Defenders reduce risk by restricting staff access, logging sensitive lookups, validating support changes with strong identity checks, and monitoring for unusual account edits or porting requests. Even when the payload is not exposed, telecom metadata can be highly valuable for follow-on abuse.
