Task mapping

Identifying how specific activities inside a job change when new technology is introduced.

Task mapping is the process of breaking a job into its specific activities and identifying which of those activities change when new technology is introduced. In cyber security, that means asking what AI, automation, or new tooling alters in day-to-day work: alert triage, log review, phishing analysis, access approval, or incident escalation. It is more precise than looking at job titles alone, because the same role can contain both automatable tasks and tasks that still require human judgment.

It matters because attackers and defenders both adapt at the task level. A criminal group may use automation to speed up reconnaissance, message crafting, or credential testing, while a security team may use task mapping to decide where analysts need training, where workflows can be automated safely, and where human review must stay in place. Good task mapping helps organizations avoid blind spots, measure whether controls actually reduce workload, and keep security operations aligned with real threats rather than outdated role descriptions.
