SYSVOL is a shared folder on Windows domain controllers that stores files used by Group Policy, including logon scripts, batch files, and other domain-wide configuration content. Because it is replicated across domain controllers, anything placed there can be delivered consistently to many joined systems.
This makes SYSVOL a high-value target in attacks that aim for broad execution inside an enterprise. Ransomware operators and other intruders may abuse it to stage scripts or payloads that run through Group Policy or other domain mechanisms, turning one foothold into widespread deployment. Defenders watch SYSVOL closely for unauthorized file changes, new or modified scripts, unusual replication activity, and unexpected Group Policy updates. Tight permissions, change auditing, and rapid review of domain controller content help limit abuse and reduce the blast radius of compromise.
