System characterization

Measuring how a system behaves under different conditions so its limits are better understood.

System characterization is the process of measuring how a system behaves under different inputs, loads, environments, and edge cases so its limits and failure modes are understood. Instead of assuming a design works everywhere, engineers test what happens when conditions change: higher traffic, unusual data, timing shifts, power fluctuations, or unexpected states.

In cyber security, characterization matters because unknown behavior is where bugs and weaknesses hide. Defenders use it to build baselines, tune alerts, and verify how software, firmware, and networks respond to stress or malformed input. Attackers also perform a form of characterization during reconnaissance and fingerprinting, probing a target to learn versions, configurations, rate limits, and other clues that reveal weak points. Good characterization does not prevent every attack, but it makes systems more predictable, testable, and easier to defend.
