Surveillance data is information collected to observe movement, behavior, or activity. In cyber security, this often includes camera footage, license-plate reads, location traces, access logs, and other records that can be searched, correlated, or retained for later use.
This data matters because it is both sensitive and actionable. If attackers steal it, they can track people, map routines, or identify targets. If defenders misuse it, or if access controls are weak, the same records can be used beyond their intended purpose. Real-world systems such as automated license-plate readers depend on surveillance data, so security teams must protect collection points, limit retention, enforce authorization, and keep audit logs. Strong governance helps prevent overbroad monitoring, insider misuse, and secondary use of data that was gathered for a narrow operational purpose.
