A support window is the period a vendor promises to maintain a product with security updates, bug fixes, and related services. For phones, laptops, routers, and cloud platforms, it defines how long the device is expected to receive patches and vendor attention before it becomes end-of-support or end-of-life.
This matters because security usually depends on continuing maintenance, not just secure design at purchase. Attackers often focus on products near or past the support window, knowing unpatched vulnerabilities may remain exploitable. Defenders use support windows to plan procurement, replacement cycles, and patch policy, especially in managed fleets. If a vendor restructures or changes product strategy, the support window may become a key risk indicator for whether a platform will stay trustworthy and manageable.
