Sunspot

A dark region on the Sun’s surface linked to concentrated magnetic activity.

A sunspot is a dark-looking region on the Sun’s visible surface, or photosphere, caused by intense magnetic activity that suppresses some of the hot plasma flow. Sunspots are not cold in an absolute sense, but they are cooler than surrounding areas, which makes them stand out in observations. They often appear in groups and can be a sign that the Sun is storing and releasing energy in complex ways.

For cyber security, sunspots matter because strong solar activity can drive space weather that disrupts satellites, GPS, radio links, and even power infrastructure. Those disruptions can affect authentication timing, communications, monitoring, and disaster recovery systems that depend on stable external services. Defenders use sunspot observations and related forecasts to anticipate higher risk periods, while attackers generally do not target sunspots directly. In practice, the term appears in monitoring, forecasting, and resilience planning, where early detection of solar activity helps operators prepare for outages and degraded connectivity.
