Substantiation

Evidence used to support a product claim, especially in advertising and procurement review.

Substantiation is the evidence used to support a product claim. In cybersecurity, it matters because buyers and reviewers cannot assess risk from marketing language alone. A claim that a tool is “AI-powered,” “autonomous,” or “secure” should be backed by technical proof such as test results, architecture details, documented controls, and measurable limits.

Without substantiation, vendors can overstate capability and hide the real attack surface. A “smart” product may rely on cloud services, telemetry, third-party APIs, or simple deterministic logic rather than true inference. Security and procurement teams use substantiation to verify where data goes, how updates are controlled, what the system can and cannot do, and whether the claim matches the implementation. Good substantiation supports safer purchasing decisions and reduces trust in unsupported promises.
