Stress scenario

a severe but plausible condition used to test whether systems and finances can withstand shocks.

A stress scenario is a severe but plausible set of conditions used to test whether systems, operations, and finances can withstand major shocks. In cyber security, it may combine events such as a ransomware outbreak, cloud outage, supplier failure, and staff unavailability to see how well an organization performs under pressure. The goal is not to predict one exact incident, but to expose weak points that normal testing can miss.

Stress scenarios matter because attackers often exploit timing and dependency failures, not just technical flaws. A denial-of-service attack during peak demand, or a breach that hits backup systems and recovery tools, can turn a security incident into an operational or funding problem. Defenders use stress testing to check incident response, manual fallback procedures, recovery time, third-party concentration, and continuity planning. If a system only works in calm conditions, it is not resilient enough for real-world attacks.
