Stop condition

The rule or signal that tells a system to pause, hand off, or terminate an action.

A stop condition is the rule or signal that tells a system to pause, hand off, or terminate an action. In software, it can be a timeout, an error threshold, a missing permission, a confidence limit, or a human approval check. In agentic AI, stop conditions are especially important because the system may loop through planning, tool use, and retries.

In cyber security, stop conditions prevent an automated system from continuing when the environment is unsafe, the goal is unclear, or the input is untrusted. Without them, an agent may keep scanning, querying, or acting on bad assumptions, which can amplify mistakes or create unauthorized access attempts. Defenders use stop conditions in sandboxed tests, incident-response workflows, and approval gates so automation can fail safely. Good stop conditions turn restraint into a security control, not just a convenience.
