Static IP

a fixed public address that can simplify remote access and service publishing.

A static IP is a fixed public address assigned to a network connection. Unlike a dynamic address that can change, a static IP stays the same, which makes it easier to publish services, set up VPNs, and create firewall allowlists for trusted partners or administrators.

In cyber security, that convenience also changes exposure. A constant address gives defenders a stable target for logging, filtering, and remote access controls, but it can also make internet-facing systems easier to find and monitor if they are poorly protected. Attackers often scan fixed addresses for open ports, weak remote management, or exposed services. Good practice is to pair a static IP with strong firewall rules, multi-factor authentication, restricted administration, and regular patching. The address itself is not dangerous; the risk comes from what is reachable through it.
